NC Certified Peer Support Specialist Training

Peer Support Specialists are people living in recovery with mental illness and / or substance use disorder and who provide support to others whom can benefit from their lived experiences. The North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist Program provides acknowledgment that the peer has met a set of requirements necessary to provide support to individuals with mental health or substance use disorder.

WellSurgent is authorized to provide several trainings that can be applied towards certification as a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist. In addition to the 40-hour Peer Support Trainings, we offer several WRAP options that satisfy the 20 hours of additional training requirement.

PREREQUISITES Take Your Heart to Work

These prerequisites apply only to the in-person Take Your Heart to Work PSS curriculum. For additional information about the PSS progam please view the Additional Notes section at the bottom of this page or visit the state requirements.

  • Completion of an Advanced Assignment before attending the Peer Support Specialist training. The assignment will be emailed to participants after they have registered for the training and completed the application.
  • Completion of 20 hours of wellness training
  • Examples of approved trainings include, but not limited to:
    • Wellness Recovery Action Planning
    • Person-Centered Thinking
    • Personal Assistance in Community Existence (PACE)
    • Whole Health Action Management (WHAM)
    If lapsed in the past, training must occur after the last certification or recertification date. A maximum of eight (8) hours of training related to children and families will be accepted. If you are unsure if your wellness training is approved please contact our team.

If you are interested in the Take Your Heart to Work in-person PSS training, please click the "Register Now" button and a team member will reach out and provide you the Take Your Heart to Work training application. This is separate application form to be completed before the first day of class.


Requirements

Certification Track A - Foundation Course (Part I and II)

The NCCPSS Program's Foundation Course was developed to adopt a single curriculum for the State.

The Foundation Course (Part I), which will be completed ONLINE, provides a strong foundation in the values, principles, and practices of peer support.

The Foundation Course (Part II) will focus on real-world applications of various topics on peer support.

  1. Register on the NCCPSS website.
  2. Make an account.
  3. Pay $20 application fee.
  4. Access & Complete application.
    1. Choose the Foundation Course track when completing application.
    2. Will need to submit boundaries and ethics training certificates (3-4hrs).
    3. Will need to submit 16 additional hours of training.
  5. Once application is approved by Program Staff - Instructions and access to Foundation Course (Part I - online) will be given.
    1. a. Complete foundation course online 20hrs.
  6. After Foundation Course (Part I - online) is complete - You will then be given instructions for the Foundation Course (Part II - in person) 40 hr. training.
  7. Register and Complete Foundation Course (Part II).
    1. Reach out to the trainer to register for the course.
    2. Send trainers your name, date of birth, email, and completion Certificate for Foundations (Part I).
  8. After completion of Foundation Course (Part II) - access to register for exam will be given.
    1. Study and Pass exam.
  9. After exam has been passed - Receive State Certification.
COST
