How Certification Track A Works
The NCCPSS Foundation Course was developed as the statewide standard curriculum. Certification through Track A requires completion of both Part I (online) and Part II (in-person) before becoming certified.
Eligibility & Application (Before Training)
To enroll in the Foundations of Peer Support (Part I), applicants must meet NCCPSS eligibility requirements and submit a certification application through the NCCPSS website.
- Must be 18 years or older
- Have lived experience and be in recovery from a serious mental illness (SMI) and/or substance use disorder (SUD)
- Applicants with co-occurring disorders must be in recovery from both
- Be in recovery for at least 18 months prior to training
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete 20 hours of peer-related training (required for enrollment in Part I)
- Complete the NCCPSS Program Ethics training
- Provide two references (requested during application)
Foundations of Peer Support – Part I (Online)
After application approval, applicants are enrolled in the ONLINE Foundations of Peer Support (Part I). This course provides a strong foundation in peer support values, principles, ethics, advocacy, and the role and scope of a CPSS.
- Delivered online through NCCPSS
- Applicants have 60 days to complete
- The training is free
Foundations of Peer Support – Part II (In-Person)
After completing Part I, applicants must complete Part II, a 40-hour in-person instructor-led training delivered by authorized trainers such as WellSurgent.
- Applicants have three (3) months to complete Part II
- Completion of Part I is required before enrolling
Certification & Examination
Upon successful completion of Foundations of Peer Support (Part II), applicants will be certified until the NCCPSS Program Certification Examination is fully implemented.
The certification examination is scheduled to launch in January 2026. Applicants will be given three attempts to pass the examination prior to recertification.
Registration for Track A (Part II)
Registration with WellSurgent is for Track A – Part II (in-person) only. Applicants must have completed Foundations of Peer Support (Part I – online) and meet all NCCPSS eligibility requirements prior to attending. A team member will follow up to confirm eligibility and completion status.

Foundations of Peer Support (Part I – online) and Foundations of Peer Support (Part II – in person) are provided free of charge to participants through the NCCPSS Program.
Participants are responsible for meeting all eligibility requirements and completing all required application and training steps within the NCCPSS timelines.
