WellSurgent

Our Mission, History, and Values

Mission

WellSurgent is a peer-operated North Carolina nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with mental and substance use disorders. Through collaboration, education and training, WellSurgent provides consumers, family members, and community supports the tools to live healthy, reduce stigma, and strengthen communities.

WellSurgent provides educational and support services regarding mental health, wellness and recovery in local communities. This mission will be carried out by collaborating with other organizations to provide training opportunities and small group facilitation for people who live with mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities and substance use disorders. These services will also be made available to family members of these individuals and other interested individuals or organizations within the communities.

History

WellSurgent Corporation was officially incorporated as a North Carolina nonprofit organization in December 2016. Prior to this time, the executive director of WellSurgent, Patty Schaeffer, operated as an individual contractor performing the same services and programs under contract with regional behavioral health providers in Western North Carolina including Partners BHM and Mental Health Association in Cleveland County (formerly Mental America of the South Mountains) where she also served as Program Manager in 2015 and 2016.

During this time, we facilitated a variety of trainings, workshops and support groups with community partners including Communities in Schools, Lincoln County Schools, Gaston College, Cleveland County YMCA, and NAMI. Programs included Adult WRAP®, Youth WRAP® QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention, Mental Health First Aid, and I.C. Hope Don't Duck Mental Health for youth and children.
